چکیده

Much of the recent research and development in the area of high-speed TCP is focused on the steady state behavior of TCP flows. However, our experience with the first research only transatlantic 2.5 Gbps Lambda link clearly demonstrates the need to focus on the initial stages of TCP. The work we present here examines the behavior of TCP flows at microscopic level over high-bandwidth long delay networks. This examination has led us to study the influence of the minute properties of the underlying network on bursty protocols such as TCP at these very high speeds combined with high latency. In this paper we briefly describe the requirements for such an extreme network environment to support high-speed TCP flows. We also present results collected using transatlantic links at iGrid2002 where we tuned various host parameters and used modified TCP stacks. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

TCP Behavior on Transatlantic Lambda's

Recent research in the area of high speed TCP has revealed that the protocol can misbehave in cases of high bandwidth long delay networks. Here we present work that clearly demonstrates this behavior of TCP flows in detail. This examination has led us to study the influence of the underlying network as well as the end user system using bursty a protocol such as TCP under such conditions. We des...

Exploring practical limitations of TCP over transatlantic networks

Tomorrow’s large physics and astronomy projects will require to transport tremendous amounts of data over long distances in near real time. Traditional TCP implementations have severe problems in reaching the necessary performance. In the recent past, researchers have shown that TCP implementations can be scaled to achieve multi-gigabit per second speeds over high-bandwidth high-delay networks....

Support of elastic TCP traffic over broadband geostationary satellite networks

Support of elastic TCP traffic over broadband GEO satellite networks v control algorithm for TCP flows over split-TCP satellite networks that can preserve the target requirements in terms of TCP steady-state throughput and TCP latency. We describe generic fixed-point approximations for the performance of TCP flows in geostationary satellite networks. We provide examples for the method applicabi...

TCP over Load-Reactive Links

Emerging network technologies offer new design choices for performing traffic engineering and management, while introducing challenges for existing protocol control mechanisms. There is a tension between new hop-by-hop capabilities and existing end-to-end mechanisms. In this paper we examine one such capability, the Load-Reactive Link (LRL), which has capacity that can be automatically varied i...

CTCP: Improving TCP-Friendliness Over Low- Buffered Network Links

Compound TCP (CTCP) is a sender-side improvement for TCP in high-speed and long distance networks. CTCP is a synergy of delay and loss-based congestion control, effectively combining them to achieve good efficiency, RTT fairness and TCP-friendliness. However, CTCP requires detecting incipient congestion effectively by estimating the backlogged packets and comparing it to a pre-defined parameter...
